Three Things to Consider When Shopping Small

Here at onthewaybox we value ourselves in hand-picking (and tasting!) our products from small businesses that focus on ethical and sustainable practices. Whether you're shopping for yourself or for a friend, we encourage you to do the research and make a conscious decision to support the smalls before spending your hard earned cash. Every dollar counts!

Check for inclusivity

Morito Chocolates is a female-owned company based in Brooklyn, New York. They are an active member of Made in NYC, a non-profit that helps support local businesses- especially ones that are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women owned. We believe that supporting everyone, especially those of race, gender, sexuality is an absolute must. “Inclusion is philosophy that embraces the idea that everyone has something of value to contribute and that everyone has a right to belong” - Lisa Friedman.

Morito's creamy, decadent, delectable hazelnut choco-sticks can be found in our The Sweetie collection.

Check for sustainability

Brands that are responsible and sustainable are the key to our hearts. We love that the Culinary Collective prides themselves on preserving the traditional food eco-system and encouraging environmental responsibility. They do so by ensuring each of their Collective Producers abide by a responsible business principle and strict product criteria. This company works solely with small producers that are rooted in and integral to the health of their communities. Using their five strict sourcing criteria, Culinary Collective guarantees that their products are all natural and fairly sourced.

The Culinary Collective makes Matiz España Dequmana Mixed Olives & Herbs which can be found in our best-selling Entertainer gift set! They're the highest quality olives that are hand-harvested and processed in small batches in barrels. The perfect bite of a traditional olive recipe with herbs and red peppers. Cured the natural way with just water and salt. No dyes, preservatives or overwhelming vinegar like other supermarket olives!

Buy local

Support your local businesses when it comes to gifting. We stumbled upon Shorthand in Highland Park in Los Angeles, California. Shorthand is a small business office supply shop, specializing in unique stationary. Shorthand is also home to Iron Curtain Press; a letter press print shop where they produce their own greeting cards and stationary supply in small batches. Rosanna Kvernmo and Joel Kvernmo founded the print shop in 2008 and opened their doors to their Shorthand storefront in 2017 with their love for cute stationery supplies and Rosanna’s quirky love for a cute office waste basket!
